Montreal Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty suffered neck fracture and a severe concussion as result of a brutal headfirst collision with a divider after a check from Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara on Tuesday night.

Montreal coach Jacques Martin described Pacioretty’s neck injury Wednesday as a non-displaced fracture of the fourth cervical vertebrae. Pacioretty appears to have avoided an injury to his spinal cord.

“Max will remain at the hospital for further observation,” Martin said in a statement. “There will be no other prognosis for the time being, but he will obviously be out indefinitely. The most important thing for our organization right now is Max’s recovery. We will continue following recommendations from the doctors and of course, Max and his immediate family would appreciate privacy in this matter.”

Pacioretty lay on the ice for several minutes, but was conscious and able to move his extremities as he was transported to the hospital. Here’s a link to our orginial story (with video) and another post on whether Chara, who was given an interference minor and ejected, should be suspended.

Chara had a confernce call with league officials earlier today, The Boston Globe reports

Pacioretty has neck fracture, severe concussion

I am sick of everyone stating that if this incident took place elsewhere on the ice it would have been fine.  Let's look at the facts!  It did not take place elsewhere!  If Chara had not have added that extra elbow, Pacioretty would not have had this injury.  Head up or head down, it would not have made a difference.  No player steps on the ice expecting to put their life on the line for the game.  Officials make bad calls everyday......the NHL has the responsibility to the players, owners and fans to get this game cleaned up!  There are far too many injuries taking place that could and should be avoided.  This is Canada's game.......save it's integrity and keep everyone safe!

I wonder if the hearing Mike Murphy had with Bruins' Zdeno Chara took all of 7 minutes, the same amount of time Max Pacioretty was unconscious. There's no justification for the serious transgression he committed. Period.    &nbs
p; I'm not sure which video Mike Murphy watched but 1/2 of the planet saw the vicious check given by Chara. Chara had a bone to pick with Pacioretty, and he made sure that the 'kid' learned his lesson. It was definitely with intent and the body position and arm movements give credence to this.  This shows how $$$$ will dictate the consequences of thuglike actions from a VIP.
How obvious does it have to be, that preferential and privileged treatment was shown towards Chara. Chara is not above the law and should have consequences for his action.  It is apparent that Chara along with some BRUINS need anger management therapy. Unsportsmanlike conduct, unacceptable, violent behaviour has now become the norm thanks to the lame decisions taken by executives like Mike Murphy. NHL officials better smarten up, unless they're waiting to send flowers to a player's funeral or to their bedside if paralyzed. Hockey is becoming ugly because the rules are not adequate or not enforced properly nor effectively. Blows to the head or injuries with intent are a serious cause of concern, not just for the player but also for the signal it sends to younger players who look up to these supposed role models.  Bottom line, Chara deserved a suspension. This was the message to send to all.  Zero tolerance. Think before you do something stupid, ...Wake up and smell the coffee, hockey is to be played the right way,not Chara's way.

I know I'm bias I'm a Habs fan and I can't stand Chara. He did this on purpose, he road him into the boards. Anyone who has played the game knows you can use other players momentum to drive them into things. These two have a past, he saw who it was and he drilled him head first into the boards. The Bruins can't beat The Habs and now they are getting dirty, pathetic!

Pacioretty has neck fracture, severe concussion

I hope Pacioretty's okay and returns soon.  However, I'm sick of the "Chara should be suspended" nonsense.  He had his hearing and was found not guilty of intentional harm.  Case closed.  It was an example of two guys playing hard in the wrong spot at the wrong time.  Had Pacioretty gotten up and hit him back, the fans would have been cheering on some great, tough, competitive hockey.  Instead, they're trying to shove the blame.

Do you think it may be a good idea to install some protective padding over the divider where that frightening mishap occurred?  Lurch ended up nearly killing Patches!!!  Does it really take another one of these "incidents" to get the message?  PLAYER SAFETY... PLAYER SAFETY....PLAYER SAFETY!!!  I don't know the french equivalent, but if anyone should be fined its the people that run the arena.  I love hockey but it has got to be the most poorly run major league sport going!!  Any of this getting through to you down there BETTMAN you patronizing little midget!!!!!  Get out of the front office and let someone who actually knows hockey run the show BETTMAN!!

Way too much talk for nothing. He should be suspended for the rest of the season. If Patch would have died and it looked like that @ first then chara would be facing prison not the hockey world. He should keep that in mind when he checks someone, especialy when clearly you see no puck in the area and I counted @ least 3 strides  for each player and chara knew exactly where he was. shame that these things happen to such a great sport but the owners and the league are FULLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS AND NOT THE PLAYERS.

Pacioretty has neck fracture, severe concussion

Tough to watch.  As an Islander fan whose team is under the microscope these days there is a part of me that wants to jump up and say "throw him out, if he was wearing an Islander uniform he'd be banned for life", but I don't think there was intent to injure.  No one can be that stupid, can they?  Hitting a guy in the face with your stick (Chris Simom) is dumb.  Purposely running a guy into the exposed end of the bench because you are pissed at him, while going 20 miles an hour, is criminally insane.
I agree the league needs to address this, either through architechtural or rule changes (make those areas "contact free zones"- don't laugh), but suspending Chara for this hit does not seem to make sense in the confines of the rules.
