Pens' Matt Cooke ejected after (another) elbow

No new rules for headshots are needed to punish Pittsburgh Penguins agitator Matt Cooke

Cooke skated across the ice five minutes into the third period Sunday and delivered an elbow to the head of unsuspecting New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh. Cooke was immediately given an elbowing major and sent to the locker room with a game misconduct. McDonagh remained in the game as the Rangers took control during the five-minute penalty en route to a 5-2 victory.

Here's a look at the video courtesy of a link provided by SB Nation

Cooke is the player most responsible for Rule 48's existence in the first place. The rule that bans blindside hits to the head of an opponent was created late last season weeks after Cooke's brutal hit on Boston's Marc Savard -- a hit that resulted in a concussion to Savard but was not illegal at the time.

This sort of thing doesn't look good for the Pens, who have led the crusade for more stringent rules governing head hits at last week's GM meetings in Boca Raton, Fla. The team has been without superstar center Sidney Crosby since early January with a concussion and Pittsburgh's majority owner Mario Lemieux proposed fining teams for players running afoul of the league's supplementary discipline system.

Such arguments ring hollow when Matt Cooke goes Matt Cooke upside another player's head.

Cooke was suspended four games after he sent Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Fedor Tyutin headfirst into the boards last month. Since he's a repeat offender under league rules, this suspension could be much harsher.

Pens' Matt Cooke ejected after (another) elbow

Unfortunately, this has always been part of hockey. That is why Gretzky needed Semenko. You don't remember anyone going after Gretzky, Yzerman and other superstars? I do....Do you think Semenko, McSorley, Baumgartner and guys similar to them were signed to big contracts because of their good looks? It is what it is my friend. Going back to the 50's and 60's with Lindsay and the big M, Gordie, those boys could play and protect themselves, but the finesse player needs and always needed their "bodyguard" or whatever you want to call it. Cooke is animal, he's no bodyguard. He's the reason for the bodyguard now. And as long as there is scum like him, there will always be the protector. Fighting is a whole different scenario....I don't even want to go down that avenue! Well, I hope Mario wakes up and dumps him. Maybe it'll send a message to the league and the players. I don't know, one could only hope....Either way, like most of you, I will continue to love this game...

 - what do you think of this weasel wearing an "A" on his sweater?

It's crap and it needs to be fixed. The Pens and most of my fellow fans have chose to block out those those 15-20 cheap shots he lays out every year. When he isn't doing that crap he is a good hockey player, but that doesn't matter to me anymore, he is a dirt bag and if he wore any other sweater Pens fans would hate him too.

It is quite obvious that this punk thug should be banned for life.  he just doesn't get it.  If he wasn't a "hockey player" he would be in jail for assault multiple times.  The fact that he wasn;t banned for at least the entire playoffs means that the NHL isn;t serious about cleaning uo its act AT ALL.  Just lip service.  I never thought I would see the day that the NHL has bigger thugs than the NFL and NBA, but it is here.  Hocky fans like hockey, MMA fans like cheap head shots.  Please keep them separate.  This guy truly should ne in jail.  I hope this common criminal isn't raising kids.  Yikes.  How scary would that be...

The rest of this season, all of the playoffs and 20 games next season.  Then he should have to apply to be reinstated.  Enough with this psychopath already.  He makes Todd Bertuzzi look like a class act.

Great post! However I do remember Pronger and others trying to run at Yzerman frequently after Kocur retired. I remember times though when the game was out of hand and guys would just grab the weakest opponent on the ice and start pummeling without warning. THAT crap needed to go. There's got to be a happy medium somewhere.

That's the thing. That crap really only started after Probert and Kocur were gone.... didn't really happen before.  And even when those guys first left, guys taking shots at Yzerman's knees or hits from behind into the glass didn't happen with no instigator rule in place.    I'm not saying the instigator rule solves all problems... there will always be some issues, nothing will ever be perfect.
For people against fighting and the players policing themselves, there is only ONE other solution.  That solution is for the league to step it up and get the job done.  Go to an extreme with suspensions that can kill a player's career if they try to injure other players.... something like 20 games first offence.. 40 the second,, a complete season the 3rd time and a lifetime suspension the 4th....... that would almost completely solve these problems.....
Cooke makes 1.8 million per season.  If his first incident would have cost him 20 games or 450 grand and the 2nd incident would have cost him 40 games and 900 grand, you can bet your ass he would clean up his game knowing the 3rd costs him 1.8 million dollars more.....   but as long as we are talking 2 and 3 and 5 suspensions nobody is going to care...  what does 5 games cost Cooke?  Just over 100 grand?  Still 1.7 million left and he took a guy out..... not nearly enough to stop him.
Gotta hurt these guys the only place it hurts.. the pocket book.....

 - what do you think of this weasel wearing an "A" on his sweater? I respect you for coming out and saying that Cooke needs to go (he does), but the fact that he's such a dirty player and somehow wears a letter never sat well with me, especially after comparing Cooke the weasel to the Hawks alternate captains (Keith and Sharp, who you'll never hear anyone call cheap). Since fans of every other team despise Cooke, I want to get the opinion of a Pens fan on Cooke's worthiness to be an alternate captain.

It is going to suck to lose him, because without the cheap crap he is a decent player, but it is time for Cooke to go. He is an embarassment to the organization and as long as he wears a Pens uniform Lemieux's words to the league are very hollow. I really don't understand why the guy can't cut it out, he is just a bad person I guess.

Unless you can step on a guys neck with a skate and kill him, the whole players policing themselves argument is the weakest argument I have ever heard. I suggest moving forward you attempt to use logic in make your points for an argument instead of bullcrap someone force fed to you.

Don't know how long you've been following hockey or how old you are, but let me tell you something.  Guess how many times I remember Steve Yzerman getting run from behind face first into the boards? Zero.  Guess how many times I remember somebody trying to take his knees out? Zero.   Don't remember those things happening much to Gretzky or even Lemieux....  not saying it never did, but things were different back then..

As for fights being broken up when somebody got the upper hand, sure.... they tried to do that. But by then the guy with the upper hand got quite a few punches into the opponents face and did a lot of damage.... and if the guy being hurt was swinging back, nobody broke up anything.
Finally.... guys like  Matt Cooke, Steve Ott, etc  were a little leary about doing stupid things.   Without the instigator penalty it was 100 percent legal for somebody to drop the gloves, grab them and throw the first punch.  If they didn't fight back by the time it got broken up they got hurt and looked like fools to the fans... and if they did fight back against the Proberts or Semenko's of the NHL, they got a good old ass whooping.... also very embarassing and a little painful.  It was ALWAYS in their head that if they do something stupid, they'll pay for it..... but not anymore....
By the way if you don't agree with people that think players should police themselves then that's fine.   But don't assume any of us that believe in this are quoting "bullcrap someone forced" on us......  and if you're not over 30 years old then you really shouldn't say a thing because you didn't see enough of the policing that went on....
