Boston Bruins forward Milan Lucic has all of one point (an assist) in the playoffs, but he really was no use for a good portion of Game 6 on Tuesday.

Lucic -- the Bruins’ top goal scorer in the regular season -- was tossed 4 minutes, 37 seconds into the second period after an ill-advised check of Montreal Canadiens defenseman Jaroslav Spacek, who had just dumped the puck in from the red line. Spacek’s face was toward the boards when Lucic charged into him, the kind of blindside hit that the league has crusaded against in recent months after so many high-profile head injuries.

Spacek, who appeared to have blood coming from his right ear, was helped off the ice with assistance of a Habs trainer. He missed about seven minutes of playing time, but did return later in the second period.

Lucic received a five-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct. Because of the nature of the penalty, the hit will be reviewed by league officials and Lucic could miss Wednesday's Game 7 if supplementary discipline is doled out.

Boston's Lucic tossed after charge in Game 6

The call on the ice of an illegal hit was a judgement call by the refs who are in a tough position in this series given what happened during the regular season and the debacle that followed the Chara hit. It's only an automatic five and a game because in their judgement it was an illegal hit.

I'm a big Habs Fan their 2nd only to my Flyers....But it looked to me as if both guys where pretty much upright when he hit him. I hate seeing guys get hurt in any way at all, but this is hockey for Gods sake....It wasn't that long ago none of these guys had head gear...and not that much longer that the goalies had no maskes ....The hit may(may) have been a second or so after he played the puck, so give him 2 min. or a 4 min. double if you want to send a message.....but not a 5 major or any games lost...Lets keep it Hockey.....

The only reason Lucic got 5 and a game was because Spacek got hurt. If Spacek wasn't bleeding or taken to the dressing room, the penalty probably only would have 2 or 5 mins. Since he was cut, it was an automatic 5 and a game. The game misconduct wasn't a judgement call from the refs.

Ok so i understand the emphasis on preventing head injuries. So I understand that after previous instances of so called excess violence in this series the officials are going to come down hard. My question is when did hockey stop becoming a mans game. Boarding yes game misconduct NO. He hit him with the shoulder first and there was no lifting and driving, no elbow to the head or head to head contact. Could it be that the officials saw a need t protect a soft player playing for a soft country?

Not sure if Lucic deserved a game misconduct. Problem is, after the Chara/Pacioretty debacle, any type of borderline hit a B's player put on a Habs player in this series would be met with swift and severe consequences which is exactly what happened. Looked like Spacek put himself into the vulnerable position by turning when Lucic was coming in at the last possible second. The hit was coming no matter what, the turn into the boards Spacek made appears to be more of the reason for the injury rather than Lucic "intentionally" putting him into the boards head first. Had Lucic arrived a split second earlier, he would have met Spacek's shoulder and it just would have been a good hard hit. Unfortunately it didn't work out that way though. Hope there is no further action taken on Lucic from this. The refs did what they thought they had to do, the game happens real fast at ice level, no replays or reviews on hits so the refs have to go with their gut reaction. Can't blame them for the call they made.
