Gary Bettman says don't buy into Winnipeg hype

Posted on: May 18, 2011 11:23 pm

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said he is “not aware” of any looming deal that would see the Atlanta Thrashers move to Winnipeg.

“There has been so much speculation,” Bettman said during the first intermission of Game 2 of the Western Conference finals on TEAM 1040-AM on Wednesday night. “How many people in your line of work were reporting the Coyotes were going to Winnipeg? Where is that coming from? It’s made up. It didn’t happen. The minute the Coyotes made it clear it clear they’re staying, we’re on to Atlanta.”

There reports out of Atlanta aren’t figments of our imagination. The Thrashers’ ownership group, Atlanta Spirit, has suffered tumult for several months the parties appear very motivated to sell both the Thrashers and possibly the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks. True North, an ownership group based in Winnipeg, has worked with the league for a couple years in attempt to get a team back to that market and reportedly is in talks with Atlanta Spirit of acquiring the Thrashers.

“True North is going about their business and they’re taking a businesslike approach,” Bettman said. “We are pleased with that, but there’s nothing to report. . . . I never say never about anything. There is no deal right now.”

This is a blog; take it with a big grain of salt. While this blog sometimes has good info, I do wish the writer would proofread his stuff. I could take him more seriously if he wrote like a professional.

Terfra1, you're wrong. The size of the market doesn't matter if there is no fan base for the team playing within the market. You brought up advertising...who wants to spend marketing dollars targeting hockey fans in the Atlanta area if, in fact, that market segment is tiny? Winnipeg may be a minor league city when it comes to most professional sports, but it's a major league hockey town. Atlanta and Phoenix may be not be minor league towns as far as basketball, baseball, or football go, but as hockey towns, they're minor league. You can build those big arena's in the big cities, but that doesn't mean the people are going to come watch a hockey team play in them. Phoenix and Atlanta have ranked in the bottom three in attendance the last three seasons and there are no signs that those attendance figures will go up...neither have cracked the 15K average attendance mark in that period of time. That, my friend, is minor league.

On a different topic, if Atlanta moves to Winnipeg, they better be the Jets....I need a reason to break out my old Dale Hawerchuk jersey.

Outside of appeasing the basically small town of Winnpeg, the NHL gains nothing adding a team there, especially if it means losing a team in a top US market such as Atlanta or Phoenix.
People need to think long term. Tese franchises were never going to make a big splash and change people's sports spending habits in 10 years or so. It takes time. It takes developing youth hockey programs, it takes developing high school and college teams, it takes high level marketing to buy you time while the interest develops.
If you are an advertiser looking to maximize your brand's appeal, do you want your message sent out to people in Atlanta, or Winnepeg.
So what, Winnepeg doesn't have an NHL team. They've got a minor league team and that fits the size of the city. It's not about how many people you can get to a game, it's about long term strategy and growth.
If it's about selling tickets, then get out of most of the Sun Belt markets and take those teams to Canada.
What do you have then? Basically the CFL with a few teams in the Northeast and Upper Midwest USA. That'll get the NHL to about, oh, 8th or 9th as far as pro sports go.
It used to be the "Big Four" of baseball, football, basketball and hockey.
Now, it's the "Big Seven" of football, college football, baseball, College basketball, basketball, NASCAR and hockey. If the NHL loses major markets, they will drop below MMA.

Right now it makes sense.  Back when Winnipeg moved, it was tough for the Canadian teams to compete financially due to a weak Canadian dollar.  Well, the times have changed and the Canadian dollar is worth at least as much as the US dollar.  Besides, they care more about hockey in Winnipeg than Atlanta.  Do the right thing and move that team to Winnipeg!

If the Trashers moved to Winnipeg they would move into the Western Conference.  They would not stay in the SE.  The schedule would have to be amended.  The Red Wings would be the team to move to the East.  Columbus is the only other Western Conference team that is in the Eastern Time Zone and Detroit has priority over Columbus as they officially put in their request before any other team.
