Less than 24 hours before acquiring his rights and just hours before free agency begins, the Buffalo Sabres have signed defenseman Christian Ehrhoff to a long-term contract, the team announced Thursday evening.

Bob McKenzie of TSN reports the deal could be for 10 years and $40 million.

Since turning down an offer to stay with the Canucks, Ehrhoff had his rights sent to the Islanders. After trying to sign him to a deal, Isles GM Garth Snow accepted that he would not be able to entice Ehrhoff to sign, he shipped his rights to Buffalo and a match was made.

Now Ehrhoff joins a retooled defensive corps in Buffalo that includes newcomer Robyn Regehr. Add in young Tyler Myers and they have the makings of a very nice blue line.

Ehrhoff brings plenty of offense from the back end, scoring 14 goals with 36 assists last season for the Presidents' Trophy-winning Canucks.

The Detroit Red Wings figured to be big contenders for Ehrhoff's services but they never got the chance. Instead they will have to look at the rest of the defensive market, which gets even paltrier without Ehrhoff available.

You can say that they got a very good 50 point defenseman for 4 million a year which makes him a steal, easy to move, and helps their team now

arinze, perhaps getting it together means beating a team with no goalie in the first round of the playoffs.  Philly was embarrassed by the Bruins in the second round so thoroughly it made people take another look at how they got there.  Oh yes, by beating the Sabres.  Sabres could not hold a lead v. Philly, a team who started 3 different goalies during that series.  Regardless, Ehrhoff and Regehr should be solid acquisitions, but this talk about them being keys to the Cup is somewhat ridiculous.  Even adding Richards will make the Sabres a serious contender only if they can get a top season out of Miller.

Congrats to the Sabres for making an impact before free agency. Ehrhoff and Regehr will make a huge impact on the point. Good for Buffalo to have a new owner who's passionate about his team and looking to make Buffalo a destination for free agents to come.

Since Detroit was mentioned in this article, news outlets say they will turn their attention to Tomas Kaberle, after re-upping Ericsson's contract for 3 more years, for some ridiculous reason.

Facerake, in case you didn't realize we have a owner. My point is nobody is going to feel like they have been bansihed to Buffalo anymore. This team will be an elite from this point forward. In the past we had to do with less here. We'll not anymore Facerake. The Sabres are not finished and that is the other point. Gonna be a fun day, unlike every other July 1st in recent memory.

It's good you're saying this being from Philly. So much more to offer....HA!  I've experienced both places.
