The Colorado Avalanche have acquired goaltender Semyon Varlamov from the Washington Capitals in exchange for a first-round pick in 2012 and second-round draft pick in either 2012 or 2013.

The Avalanche have a hole to fill in net and most assumed they would do it by signing Tomas Vokoun. Perhaps they still do, but bringing in Varlamov could signal the deal fell through with Vokoun.

Varlamov had been rumored to be on his way to the KHL, but stated he wanted to try and stay in the NHL, just that his days in Washington were done. Now he likely has his chance to stay in the States and be a starter.

Now where does Vokoun go? The Miami Herald's George Richards suggests the netminder could be headed to the desert to sign with the Phoenix Coyotes. Still, where Vokoun ends up will be one of the most interesting questions to follow for the rest of the day.

Avalanche acquire Varlamov from Caps for picks

Good for Colorado to get a goalie that has shown he has potential at some point in his career, but as always Colorado gives up more than they get in return.  The only reason I think the 2 picks is too much is because they could have gotten Varlamov in the free agent market without giving up a single pick.

There is no guarantee that a draft pick in the first round will make it to the NHL and even if he does there is nothing saying he will be good so I dont worry too much about giving up picks when you have to but they didnt have to.

LOL
except everyone else in the league is laughing at the Avs for giving a 1st round pick for a constantly injured nothing special goaltender.
Varlamov is worth a 2nd round pick at most
McPhee took it to the avs just like St.Louis did during the season.

Every Avs fan I know is livid about this deal.

The Avs just traded a LOTTERY pick for Varlamov, leave it to redwings1969 to think its a good deal for both sides.

Great move getting that much for Varlamov.  Really surprised at Colorado.

With Neuvirth and Holtby playing consistantly good, Valrlamov was expendable. He was unable to stay healthy for a good stretch therefore limiting his playing time. Good move by the Capitals in letting him go. Get those extra draft picks and help build the future. Build the minor league teams up with the picks.

Good move by McPhee getting 2 picks for a guy that's yet to stay healthy for an entire season and has played sporadically throughout his young career.  However, I'm not ready to say Neuvy is the Caps now, still future if you ask me they need a solid veteran net minder if they want to get past the 2nd round.

This is one of those trades that's great for both teams.  The Caps could afford to let Varlomov go and the Avs needed a good goalie with at ton of potential..... Obviously Colorado has to perform now and finish higher in the standings to avoid giving the Caps a lottery pick but they have enough talent if they stay healthy to compete for a playoff spot and at the very least stay clear of the lottery.... the Caps will get a decent 1st round pick and a 2nd round pick as well for the future.... neither team can ask for anything more then they got.

I'm a Caps STH and a big fan of Varly. I'm sorry to see him go, but thought the writing was on the wall when Irbe left as goalie coach. I'm happy to have him with the Avs, and hope we get to see him with the Monsters on a conditioning stint. (His biggest flaw is his inability to stay healthy.)

This trades pretty big considering we had three great goaltenders and you cant keep 3 great goalies and besides varlamov got injured to often to start.

Ya especially since they could have signed him to an offer sheet as a RFA and only had to give up a 2nd rd pick.  Damn Colorado is dumb.
