The Flyers have taken another former Penguin; they have signed center Maxime Talbot during  a furious Friday, free-agent frenzy.

Earlier in the day the Flyers signed Jaromir Jagr, who was believed to be favoring a return to Pittsburgh -- the place he began his NHL career.

Philadelphia didn't figure to be much in the way of a big player in free agency considering they were already approaching the cap ceiling. But they still found enough room to sign Jagr and Talbot in addition to signing Andreas Lilja away from Anaheim and re-signing Jakub Voracek, who they acquired in a trade for Jeff Carter.

Talbot's deal is for five years and $9 million, according to Darren Dreger on TSN.

If you thought the Flyers-Penguins rivalry was heated before, just wait until they play next. The Flyers are trying to re-tool the roster after making room for goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, and I'd say they've done just that. The two signings today both pretty much came out of left field and the Flyers will end this week the same way they ended the last: as the most talked-about team in hockey.

Talbot scored eight goals and had 13 assists for the Penguins last season.

not a bad move at all, he is a tuff and gritty player.  works hard on the ice and just what the Flyers need for a 4th line center.

Why people hating on the Flyers signing this guy less than 2 mil a year. He is a good player. We lost Powe and got another one just like him. Is kind of a swap methinks. We also got Jagr (vomits in mouth). He was once the greatest on ice, no longer and I hear he is kind of a douchebag, still he is definitely worth a shot since we loaded with young guys. Bos and Phi most teams with 100 point seasons, I think the front office does well for us, I wont complain about management and personell. The only player we gave away that will hurt us come playoff time is Leino. Did we lose him or just not sign yet?

Say what you will about Talbot, he's a good locker room guy. Unlike that asshole Jagr!

At the end of the day are the Flyers favorites for Stanley Cup? NO way, lots of trades but GT is still suspect!

Great point.  The Flyers lost, Versteeg, Leino, Carter, Richards, Powe and (cough) Leighton.

They gained Jagr, Talbot, Boynton, Voracek, Simmonds and Bryzgalov.  On the whole, that's a lot of guys to pick up via trade or free agency, but the front office clearly thinks they're close to a Stanley Cup victory.

Sorry, I just don't get it.  Why sign a mediocre player like Talbot when they could have kept a guy like Powe for a whole lot less.  Maybe he's a good guy and a hard worker but they are now a team thin on skill players and taking up a roster spot for another blue-collar type player is not going to help their offense any.  If this signing causes them to lose out on resigning Leino this is going to hurt them.

Oh no!   What will the Pens do without Jagr and Talbot?    That's really gonna intensify the rivalry..  The players the Flyers lost probably wont have as much of an effect as these two additions... right?
