Erik Cole has spent the majority of his career in Carolina, but his time in Raleigh is done as he's headed to Montreal for four years, $18 million, according to multiple reports.

Cole was one of the top-rated forwards on the board this free-agent season. There was still hope in Carolina that the team would bring back Cole, but GM Jim Rutherford hinted that perhaps the team wouldn't be able to afford what he would be looking for.

Rutherford shared what happened from a Carolina standpoint: "The Canes took a last ditch effort to sign Cole and changed position considerably, but were unable to keep him."

It's a pretty hefty contract for Cole, but it helps the Canadiens add some size and scoring on the wings.

Last season Cole scored 26 goals and had 26 assists last season for the 'Canes.

Hey X factor, what the hell do you care about QUEBEC PROVINCIAL TAXPAYERS paying for an amphitheater, that by the way will serve also for Quebec City's bid for the Winter Olympics??? The same agreement goes on in EVERY NHL city across North America. Also it's none of your goddamn business anyways!
You jealous cause you come from bum phuck nowhere Moncton?

This year's FA crop can't be measured in dollars the way previous years have been. With the jump in the cap and the lousy field to pick from, it was obvious players were going to be overpaid. Yes, 4 years at 4.5 for Cole is overpaying, but he is very much the kind of player the team needs and will compliment Pleakanec and Cammalleri very well. This also allows Andrei Kostitsyn to stay on a line with Lars Eller since the 2 of them seemed to have decent chemistry once put together. It was a smart signing for a player who will give the team exactly what they need for at least 2 of the 4 years if not more. It is, unfortunately, the new financial reality of the league.

so the habs did add about 50 points to their roster with an gritty Erik Cole, thats nice! sure you can say all about how Montreal did overpaid this guy but remember, he would be last seasons second best scorer on a team who finished 6th in the conference and lost 3 times in overtime to the stanley cup champ. adding potenial 26 goals to this team means a lot, specially if you dont lose any production through the free agency. i really cant see how this is a bad contract, saw a lot more worse stuff going on yesterday

So essentially the Canadiens are going to pay him, a million dollars for every 10 pts he scores this season? I'm sure that Henrik and Daniel Sedin would like to sign up for that contract.

Cole is seemingly always hurt...because he is. Every other season he misses 15+ games or so. He's nothing more then a second line winger with decent size, and league average offensive production.

Going to miss Cole in Carolina, but at 4.5M/yr for 4 years, Rutherford had to let him go.

Quebecdom...if you think that Erik Cole is a BARGAIN at 4.8, then you don't deserve TAX PAYER money to build a new arena for the NEW Nordiques. Not that you deserve TAX PAYER money regardless, because you don't! So, if Erik Cole is worth 4.8 in your mind and let's say mmm that Pavel Datsyuk of the Wings, is making 6.07 per, who is getting the BARGAIN these days? Dumb teams that OVER-PAY these days are going to be the same teams in 2 or 3 years trying to unload them. So have your BARGAIN player, while us Wing Fans enjoy the likes of Zetterberg and Datsyuk at a REAL BARGAIN. Only good thing about this for the Habs is yes, they got a Power Forward type and FINALLY signed a forward Taller than a Smurf.

If the boozing slug Michael Ryder costs a hefty 3.5M in this year's RFA too much cap space- too few players era, then a hard working and rarely injured solid Erik Cole at 4.8M is a veritable BARGAIN!

Erik Cole is a great veteran player  ... but at 32 going on 33, this is a bad contract.   4 years at $4.5 million a pop is simply too much to invest in an againg player.   I think the Habs will be loving the first and maybe the 2nd year ... but after that, they'll be wondering why they ever signed this guy for so much at this stage of his career.   Either way, next season the Habs will be more competitive, so at least they'll have that ... even if they are STILL the 2nd best team in their division.
