Shea Weber's hit on Hansen draws hearing with NHL

Nashville Predators star defenseman Shea Weber might be the next player to experience the Shanahammer. He has been called to a hearing in front of Brendan Shanahan regarding his hit on Jannik Hansen of the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday night. His hearing is set for 2 p.m. on Friday.

At 5:12 of the Preds' 5-1 loss, Weber was sent to the box for boarding Hansen and was also given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the play.

Have a look for yourselves.

Weber is not going to have much of a defense on this one. About the only thing going for him is that Hansen wasn't hurt on the play and it didn't seem to be an incredibly violent hit.

With that said, though, it was a lazy play from Weber. The puck passed Hansen by on the boards and is well past him by the time Weber arrives. Moreover, Hansen had his back to Weber for some time before the hit, which was delivered square to the back of the jersey.

I have no doubt Weber will be facing punishment from this hit in the form of a suspension. How long is anybody's guess, but the Predators sure hope not for long. They have a ship to get straightened.

And yet NOTHING - NO review, NO suspension, NO fine for the Dennis Seidenberg boarding of Jeff Skinner. Complete GARBAGE. Also, this was at the end of an extremely chippy game in which the refs tried to calm things down.

I can easily make the case that the Letang boarding was the lesser of the three (and not even illegal at all since Burmistrov turns at the last second despite what Banahan claims - the video doesn't lie). Yes, Letang had a "prior", but give me a freaking break.

Add to this the 4 GAME suspension of Rome during the STANLEY CUP FINALS for what the league admitted was "an otherwise clean hit" square on in the front but a HALF SECOND late.

Just a complete joke. Banahan and the league have lost all credibility.

$2500 fine.   What a joke, suspend him or let it end at the boarding call.    Shanahan has lost certain parts of his anatomy to the BOG and their merry minions in the front offices.    He smeared him clear in the numbers, wasn't that what they were trying to prevent?   Guess not, I just wish I could stop thinking about it.

The real tragedy is that I waste so much time getting frustrated with the league office that I'm not able to focus on griping about the zebras as much as I should.   Maybe they have a stronger union and are to blame.

I'm going to get some Pepto.

There is no way Weber should be suspended for this hit, he is a beast...hansen in not.....yes it was to the back and yes it was a penalty but it should in now way result in a suspension.  This kid in the best Defenceman in the game, and keep his record clean and keep hitting in this game Shanahammer

The NHL is a total joke now.  Based on what I have seen and all of Shannahans explanations every single hit from behind is going to be suspended.  Someone on your team who is great at diving and embelishing hits is quickly becoming as improtant as someone who scores goals.  Glad we get all the hoghlights of hits now instead of highlight reel goals and saves.  NHL = Nancy Hockey League

Somebody please explain to me how this hit is any different than the Dennis Seidenberg boarding of Jeff Skinner.

I want to see if Brian Gionta gets summoned for boarding Z. Michaelik's face. Based on the Letang suspension any 2 minute boarding call should draw a suspension from here on out. Not only did Gionta board him directly from behind, but he went straight for the head not the body.
Are you serious? You expect consistency from the NHL? Like how there wasn't ONE WORD about Seidenberg's boarding which was every bit as bad (IMO worse) than the Letang boarding.

Brendan Banahan and the NHL are full of crap.

The integrity of the game is on its way out. Players can now bait boardings by turning at the last second. The upshot of this new policy is that players don't need to worry about keeping their heads up or about putting themselves in vulnerable positions.
