Chicago Blackhawks forward Daniel Carcillo had a disciplinary hearing on Saturday afternoon for an incident that occurred during a 3-0 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday night. Just before the Blackhawks hit the ice on Saturday for a home game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, it was announced that he will be suspended two games for his shove from behind on Hurricanes defenseman Joni Pitkanen.

There was no penalty called during the game.

In the video describing the suspension, Rob Blake, who was apparently filling in for Brendan Shanahan, offered his description.

"As the video shows, Carcillo leans on Pitkanen from behind," said Blake. "At this point, Pitkanen's balance is intact and his feet are planted securely on the ice. When Carcillo pushes Pitkanen, it throws him forward causing him to toe-pick, which leads to his loss of balance and crashing into the boards. Furthermore, Pitkanen has made no sudden movements just prior to, or simultaneous, to this hit that would have contributed to the contact. This is a violation to the boarding rule."

You can check out the play, as well as Blake's complete explanation right here:

It's the fifth time Carcillo has been suspended in his NHL career, with Blake saying that past history factored in the decision.

Daniel Carcillo suspended 2 games

If reputations of players, whether recent or distant past is taken into account with punishments dished out to players, then each individuals punishment should reflect the incident that they are being punished for, in regards to previous incidents relating to such incidents

I'm all for protectying moreb players fronm serious injuries but trial by video seems wrong so long after the incident, surely the referees should be able to review such plays just after theb game or during the intermissions to take action at that point,.

There should be course of players then being able to appeal the severity of the suspension, action taken against them as in soccer

Carcillo was quoted as saying he's considering a name change.   He also professed his innocence.   We had to watch Scott last night.
Blake should not speak to the camera, he's going to put everybody to sleep.

Actually, Pitkonen loses an edge just slightly before the Carcillo hit.  But Carcillo did hit him from behind, so the suspension was technically correct.

And for all you brain surgeons out there, this is the first time Carcillo has been suspended for an "illegal" hit.  All the others have to do with temper control issues.

And, if anyone of you had half a brain cell, Carcillo has been a pillar of restraint throughout the preseason and during the regular season.  He has been playing on a line with Marian Hossa and Patrick Kane, and been doing extremely well.  The guy has skills and just had an unbelievable pass to Jonathon Toews for a goal two games ago prior to tonight's suspension.

Everyone in Chicago had their doubts, but Carcillo is a pretty darned good hockey player with a good skill set.  What happened against Pitkonen could have happened to any player by any player.  There wasn't even a penalty called on the play for boarding.

What I find disgusting is that the NHL took into account his "prior history" when they suspended him, even though NONE of the previous suspensions had ANYTHING to do with an illegal hit.  If there was a past pattern, I'm okay with that call.  But NEVER has Carcillo been suspended for running someone from behind into the boards.

So basically the NHL is saying, yeah, well, the hit looked kinda bad but you've been suspended before, so grab some pine anyways.  Seems like a crappy explanation from the league, IMO.

I like the guy when he's on his game, but this was dumb and he does lose his brain too often.

It's too bad the Flyers ever got him, but it's good they got rid of him.
I have liked Carcillo, his goals are skilled, he hits hard. However, he has a brain control problem. Welcome to him being kicked out of games, suspended, etc. Blackhawks.
