Ugly incident at end of OHL game

We take you to the Ontario Hockey League for what is perhaps the ugliest incident we've seen in hockey this season, and perhaps will see all year.

At the conclusion of Friday's game between the London Knights and the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, a game the Greyhounds won by a 4-3 margin, Greyhounds player Nick Cousins fired a puck at the empty net at the opposite end of the ice after time had expired. His celebration then took him into the path of Knights player Ryan Rupert. After Cousins bumped into him, and appeared to say something, Rupert turned around and delivered a vicious two-hand baseball bat style slash right to Cousins' stomach.

And then he dropped his gloves and started to throw punches as Cousins dropped to the ice, resulting in the emptying of both benches.

It goes without saying that a lengthy suspension is coming, and it's worth asking if Rupert will suit up in a game again this season.

Just last week the OHL handed out a 20-game suspension to Niagara Ice Dogs forward Tom Kuhnhackl for his hit to the head on Ryan Murphy.

Cousins, a Flyers draft pick back in the June draft, has a reputation for being a bit of an agitator on the ice, and he definitely demonstrated some of that at the end of the game. But that's still no excuse for Rupert's actions. It was ugly, and earned him whatever punishment the OHL hands out.

Short of Nick Cousins previously doing somthing similar to one of Ryan Rupert's teamates.  There is no excuse for this.  Don't care what Cousins may have said or if he was showboating.  That was a way over the top response.  Big heads need to show this garbage isn't tolerated.

Hockey is a game where you are held personally responsible for your actions on the ice by the other players on the ice. Cousins picked the wrong guy and showed his true colours by turtling as he always does. He should fit the Flyers organization just fine as they have in the past and continue to embarrasse the sport of hockey like no other. Having said that, Rupert went way over the line and should be looking at a 20 game suspension at max.

This the kind of stuff that happens when fighting is removed from the game.  I don't remember stickwork being a problem until they clamped down on fighting in the mid 90s in the NHL and followed on all levels.  This incident would have never happened if Rupert feared getting pounded to the ice in a good old fashioned scrap.

The stickwork and cheap shots that have gone on with no fear of retribution because fighting has been removed has caused far more injuries than any fighting could.

He needs to get banned from the league.   Send a message about this stuff now.   NHL should offer some persuasive arguments (maybe in the form of cash under the table) to ban this guy.   Stop it in the jrs and you'll see less in the NHL hopefully.   Chicken$#$# move.

He should be removed from hockey simple enough. That was brutal. Not only did he intend to hurt him as much as possible when the guy was limp and face down he attacked him some more dropping the gloves and mauling a defensless person. BAN BAN BAN
