Let's start by making this clear right from the start: when a goaltender is out of his crease he is not fair game to be hit (rule 69.4).

In the first period of Saturday's game in Boston between the Bruins and Sabres, Milan Lucic blocked a shot at his own blue line, and as he attempted to go down the ice on a breakaway, the puck ended up sliding too far out in front of him and into the Buffalo end of the ice. That's where Sabres goalie Ryan Miller scrambled out of his crease in an attempt to knock it away from Lucic, who was in no hurry to slow down or ease up.

This is the result, complete with a flying goalie mask:

Lucic was issued a two-minute minor for charging, while it's a mild surprise that didn't spark more of a fight seeing as how Buffalo just watched its starting goalie get run over.

UPDATE: Following the game Miller had some strong words for Lucic, via John Vogl of the Buffalo News: "I just stuck around because I wanted to say what a piece of [feces] I think Lucic is."

Quote of the year so far.

If a goalie comes that far out with a guy streaking down the ice for a loose puck, collisions are going to happen. The problems with this incident is it involved a no class cheap shot Lucic who clearly try to hurt Miller. The refs clearly blew the call by not giving a major penalty and a game misconduct. Imagine if it was Sean Avery, he would have gotten a life sentence. Then the league allows Lucic to run his mouth after the game and call the Sabres cowards. I hope someone on Buffalo gets even with him tonight.

I understand that it is currently against the rules...but I don't think it should be. It seems to me that a goalie who strays that far out of the crease is not all that unlike a QB who decides to keep the ball and is scrambling for a 1st down. Basically, if the goalie is out of the crease, he is as much fair game as any other player on the ice. That doesn't mean they can be abused, just that if it's legal to hit a defenseman in a particular way, it should also be legal to hit a goalie out of the crease that way. I would say the goalie has to be 100% out of the crease, otherwise you are going to see players intentionally draw them out and then whack them to keep them out of position for a teammate to shoot the puck (thinking of Tomas Holmstrom and other guys whose primary job is to be a nuisance to the opposing goalie). I think it should be allowed, but not without limits. Coming a foot out of the crease as part of the normal flow of a game to block a shot or something is different than skating 15 feet out to try to poke the puck away from a rushing player like in the video.

Essentially, if the goalie strays, fair game. If the goalie stays, not.

Your right, the Rochester team is probably better than those whimpy Sabres. Maybe you should suit up and take on Lucic! Lol...

Northeast - you're claim of being a goalie is a bit suspicious.  Didn't you pose the question of 'what's stopping goalies from skating around when they feel like it' (to paraphrase).  Again...any hockey player would laugh at the suggestion and put you in your place like my response did.  What's to stop them...hilarious.  You must've played in a really competitive league with that level of understanding of the game.

As for the guy with anger management issues...take it easy pal.  It's a message board.  You think as a mid-forties ex Junior player I'm not aware today's habs are a bunch of runts?  Please.  I'm from the Savard and Gainey days.  In my books, if you're going to be small you'd better be damned good.  Unfortunately, today's Club de Hockey Canadiens cares more about the ability of the players to speak to the French media after the game than they do winning.  We should actually give the Molsons time to put their stamp on the team, as the current club is still the product of years of retarded ownership.

Look - I can't stand lightweight hockey and my fave player is Ryan Clowe for perspective.  That said, you can't say that there's no merit to the fact that today's punk cheap shot artists are gutless pussies who would've had their lights punched out in the seventies for taking these types of liberties.  Give me a thundering hitter like Stevens.  Sure he was a BIT dirty...but I think a BIT dirty is fine...these guys today cross the line.  Hell, in the old days THE GOALIE THEMSELVES would've planted you for a dirt nap for taking a run at them and that's EXACTLY what Lucic did here.  If you watch the tape and don't think he coasts into Miller deliberately then you've never played a decent minute of the great game.

Would love to have seen Hextall get run like Miller did.  "Axe" would've laid the lumber over Lucic's gutless skull and THEN blocker-socked him onto the trainers table.

Traditional hockey code would not be for the Sabres to run Thomas, but to take on Lucic one on one. Someone, or more than one, will throw down with him in the next game. Kind of late in my opinion, they should have done it in that game. I dont really see the next game being much of a blood bath beyond Lucic getting in 1 or 2 fights. But then again that is traditional hockey code, Buffalo could come out like the pansies they looked to be and start taking cheap shots.

Let's watch Milan Lucic crush Ryan Miller

First of all, I want to take my hat off to Ryan Miller, again, for showing that he is a tough competitor no matter what. There are many, many, many forwards and defenseman out there that would have flopped on the ground like a fish out of water after receiving 1/10th the lick he took. So, great job Ryan; you are the schizzle!!

Maybe Milan went a bit far, and I think though he wanted to give Ryan a bit of a shot, I don't think he intended it to be that hard. The Bruins weren't playing all that well throughout the first period and I think he wanted to give them a spark. He has never been a dirty player; just tough. That being said, I think the pitiful reaction by the Sabres fueled the Bruins even more than Lucic had anticipated. To me, it looked like the Sabres were scared. Much like the Oilers vs the Bruins a few nights before, the Sabres seemed to be intimidated by the Bruins (I'm not making that up; even some of the Oilers players said that they played like they were intimidated and admitted that they should not have been).

I think Lucic added insult to injury after the game by saying that if anyone had done that to their goalie, the Bruins would take care of business. Then he added that they (the Sabres) are a totally different team than the Bruins are. Wow!! OUCH!! They play again next week, Nov 23rd I believe. Should be one hell of a game :)

As for the guy who wrote, ram Thomas through the glass; c'mon man, don't be an azz. If Thomas comes out to the faceoff dot to play the puck, then I guess a sabre should put a bit of a lick on him. But, if you want to run the guy when he is in his crease, then you are way offsides. I like the Sabres, and I think they will come out swinging. But, I don't believe anyone will run Thomas in the crease. If they get a chance to take a shot at him outside the crease, I am sure they will. The Sabres are a good team and a class act. I think they will come out a lot tougher next game, but they won't play douchebag hockey. maybe they need to suit up Rob Ray for a few games to show some of these kids how to play tough, in your face hockey (like the Bruins do).

November 23rd

The next time they meet I guarantee there will be trouble.  You think Lindy is going to let Shanahan stand in the way of justice?  Shanahan is  stupid SOB.  He should not have this job.  He has failed already.  Get rid of him and Bettman.  Both.  Get out and get out soon.  I have had it. Lindy, time to run em!!!!!   Suit up half the Rochester team and send them on a head hunting mission.  that is all.   Just do it.  Run Thomas through the glass and tell Enroth to use his stick in defense.  I am going to request all fans to buy a beer and give them a nice shower in the tunnel.   The stinking Bruins.
