Chris Pronger hasn't appeared in a game for the Philadelphia Flyers since Nov. 19, having missed each of the team's past four games with what was originally described as an illness.

On Monday, general Paul Holmgren announced that Pronger will now be on the shelf for the next four weeks after undergoing surgery on his left knee on Tuesday afternoon to "clean out some loose particles that have given Chris some problems over the last month or so."

Said Holmgren, "We were hopeful that the time missed with a virus that Chris has been fighting would settle things down in his knee, but after an examination yesterday, it was decided that the surgery is the way to go at this time. We expect Chris will be back playing in four weeks.”

Injuries have been an issue for the veteran defenseman over the past two seasons. He appeared in just 50 games for the Flyers last season, and he's already missed time this season due to an eye injury that came after he was struck in the face by a stick. He's played in 13 games this season, scoring one goal to go with 11 assists while also logging over 22 minutes of ice-time per game.

Given his age (he's currently 37) and the mounting injury problems it's worth pointing out that he still has five years remaining on a seven-year contract that he signed prior to the 2010-11 season that carries an average annual salary of $4.9 million against the salary cap.

ClassicoDave is upset his team has trouble winning games unless it's the Flyers this season. Even before the move to Phoenix, Winnipeg had zero Stanley Cup appearances after their move the NHL back in the day. I understand his bitterness.

Now classicdavo, why would you be happy that the man is injured?  I have never heard where he is anything but the classic competitor.  Rooting for his injury, applauding it even, is disgraceful.

Gee, I hope Philly has a spare box of Pronger parts hidden somewhere cuz it appears that their mighty captain is falling apart. More injuries, more surgeries, more time missed, It couldn't happen to a nicer guy, lol.

The guy is 37, he's not close to what he was, and never will be. He's breaking down more and more now.
and the Bruins still would have swept the Flyers last year, with a healthy Pronger

I agree argo. The NHL needs to change this stupid policy of saying it's a lower or upper body injury crap. Every other sport reveals injuries so why does the NHL need to be so secretive about it? What's the big deal to be honest about an injury. It makes them look foolish and minor league compared to the other sports.

Boston may very well of made quick work of us with a healthy Pronger last year. However, it wouldn't of been as easy with him healthy.I'm willing to sacrifice a few wins to see him healthy in April. There is enough talent and depth to weather the storm.

The NHL injury-reporting system is a joke. Apparently it's not enough that they allow clubs to feed the public this "lower-body injury" stuff (which isn't even going to fool the club's opponents, who will find out the real injury through the grapevine); they allow them to blame a virus when it's really knee problems that are keeping him out.

C'mon, NHL, it's time to eliminate this mickey-mouse stuff if you want to be taken seriously.
