Flames goalies Karlsson, Kiprusoff run into

We had more goalies being run into on Sunday night. Of course it happened between two teams that don't like each other all that much (you could probably say that about any pair of Canadian teams).

With the Vancouver Canucks cruising 5-1 over the Calgary Flames in the third period, there was an unfortunate accident that took Flames goalie Henrik Karlsson out.

On the play the Canucks' Jannik Hansen was driving to the net and being chased by Tom Kostopoulos. Both guys eventually go down and Kostopulous slid right into Karlsson who immediately began grabbing at what appeared to be his knee. Karlsson left the game after the hit and limped toward the locker room.

This was just an unfortunate accident, a little friendly fire. Seemed to be nothing more than a freak play leaving a player perhaps injured, we'll know more later how seriously.

But then Miikka Kiprusoff came on to relieve Karlsson and, wouldn't you know it, he was run into too.

This time the hit was actually levied by an opponent as David Booth tried to cross in front of the crease but was held up by Joe Piskula and was left with nowhere else to go. So he ran into Kiprusoff.

Of course, a melee ensued. The Flames were already being beat and lost a goalie from a hit, so they took exception to this one. Plus, it really didn't look good for Booth, who seemed to follow through the impact high. Granted, it looks worse than it was, but with the heightened sense of protection around the goalies right now, it will raise some eyebrows.

You just know that this will remain a hot topic until something is done about it. What, I'm not entirely sure. But there is a lot of clamoring for clarification of the rules if nothing else. Soon they will be protected with the same ferocity that we see in football with the quarterbacks.

Nearly impossible sometimes to stop before hitting the goalie....it is the officials discretion as to whether or not the player could have stopped or was forced into the goalie; sometimes it goes the way you want and sometimes not. I do not understand the goaltender interference call these days at all. I was at the Kings/Habs game on Saturday and on two occasions a King defender was blatantly cross checked into the Habs goalie and on both plays the Kings D was called for interference. I realize the game was aired on hockey night in Canada and the Habs had to be given a win, but bs call like that have no place in hockey. To make matters worse there was major slash to the stick of Jarret Stoll in the final minute during a face off, snapping the stick in two at the point of contact, no call was made. This looked partiularly bad as the Kings were a goal down, had pulled the goalie and the face off was in the Habs zone.......Kings would have had a 2 man advantage to try and tie the game....... I do not blame officiating in most cases for a loss, but this was so bad and seemed to be an obvious set up to make sure the Habs were victorious on Hockey Night........don't think this stuff doesn't happen.

And lastly, I'm not all for the entire protection blanket of goalies.  Goalies are players too, and need to know when they can be hit, and their teammates need to know when too.  Goes hand-in-hand with taking responsibility when your own actions get your goalie hurt, or at least putting him at risk.

Just to point out a different between Lucic's hit and these hits and the few that have happened since.  These recent hits were in the goalie's crease.  Looch on Miller was at the faceoff circle.  It doesn't matter that Looch had space on either side, the goalie was 20 feet out of the net for a race for the puck.
I agree.  There is a hexagon behind the net for a reason.  If you're not supposed to hit goalies at anytime, why have it?  Goalies need to stay where they are if they want to be protected.

And secondly, I understand that the second goalie was taken out by Booth, but the d-man held him up.  If you're going to hold up a guy who is heading towards your goalie with nowhere to go, that's on you, not him.  I've seen players try to stop on their way to the goalie, only to have their momentum continued by an opposing player (teammate of that goalie) either by checking, pushing, leaning, whatever....and that goalie gets run into by the player.  Now typically there is nothing wrong with that, until the player receives a penalty for goalie interference.

Don't want goalies being run into like this?  Fix that rule.  I don't want to see goalies being run into, but at the same time, their teammates need to take responsibility for not only protecting him from the other team, but ensuring their own actions don't directly cause the problem in the first place.

Well, yeah.  Lucic had literally everywhere else on the ice to go, but he chose instead to run into Miller - check him, actually - and Gutless Shanny actually patted him on the back for it and said, "hey, man, no apologies necessary."  So, here you have the fallout and it's likely to remain like this all season.  Also, it bears pointing out that nobody was crowding Lucic or pushing him; he just plain checked a goalie.  Shanahan's initials, BS, say it all about his "discipline" policies.  What a joke.

I know Shanny said it wasn't open season on goalies when he allowed Lucic to take out Reimer for weeks without penalty, but I think he might have been mistaken.
