Edmonton Oilers defenseman Andy Sutton had a hearing with Brendan Shanahan on Saturday, and later in the evening it was announced by the league that he has been suspended eight games for his hit on Carolina Hurricanes forward Alexei Ponikarovsky on Wednesday night. He was penalized two minutes for charging on the play, as he clearly left his feet and delivered a blow to the head of the Hurricanes forward.

It's already Sutton's second suspension of the season as he was banished five games for a hit on Avalanche rookie forward Gabriel Landeskog earlier in the year.

"While we acknowledge that on many big body checks a hitters feet may at times come off the ice to a certain degree," said Shanahan in his latest league video. "We felt the degree in which Sutton's skate comes off the ice is excessive."

He also added that Sutton's past history, which includes seven fines or suspensions in his NHL career, as well as the fact that Ponikarovsky did not suffer any major injury as a result of the hit, were all taken into account when reaching his decision.

Here is the full video, which also includes clips of Sutton's past run-ins with league discipline:

if he didnt leave his feet it wouldve been fine, someone his size doesnt need to so I agree with him getting suspended but not for 8 games. I woulve given him less, Scott Stevens did crap like that his whole career and rarely faced any punishment - welcome to the Bettman era PC hockey

Sutton deserves every game for being Sutton.   He spends too many shifts playing "crash into people" instead of hockey.    Weed guys like him out.

I like this suspension so I'm sure I'll be disappointed with Shanahan's next decision.

"Consistent" Brendan Shanahan strikes again!

The hit was dirty.  Sutton is a dirty player.  It doesn't take much mental power to see that suspending him for longer and longer periods of time is appropriate, since he clearly likes to leave his feet to make what should be a simple, clean hit.  So, screw him.  He isn't being jobbed here.

I agree completely with other posters, however, in the belief that Shanahan is a big joke, and until he retroactively levies a huge suspension on Lucic - instead of, for instance, punishing others for his own spineless reaction to the Lucic hit on Miller; or denying there's anything weird about his complete cave-in to the reigning Cup champions - Shanahan will always be a joke as a "disciplinarian."

To recap: Sutton suspension = deserved.  Shanahan's soapbox speeches = phony.  Milan Lucic = goon.

In my opinion Shanahan is becoming a big joke.  I'm all for getting rid of dirty hits and I've said many times they need stiffer penalties, but it appears to me the only thing that matters is who the accused is, not what they did.  Lucic clearly and intentionally runs over Miller and gets nothing yet Tootoo tries to avoid Miller going sideways, Miller follows along and starts hitting him, Tootoo never connects and gets 2 games.  Sutton left his feet, yes he did.  But Ive seen players, MANY players do the same thing to a player that got rid of the puck way before the hit unlike in this case where the puck was barely gone.

8 games for that?  If that's the case, we should have seen at least 5 or 6 15 game suspensions this year already....... but we haven't because the people Shanny is after haven't been involved much yet or haven't been doing much wrong.   I guarantee you if Datsyuk on the Wings did what Sutton did he would never get 8 games.... no chance.

Sutton is a thug, but that hit no more deserved a suspension than most hits in hockey.
