Mike Milbury, the former Bruins player and coach as well as Islanders GM who is now an analyst for Versus, NBC and NESN as well as occassional guest on Hockey Night in Canada, has been charged with assaulting a 12-year-old hockey player in Brookline, Mass. The report first came from CBSBoston.com.

The Boston Herald has more information on the details of what happened.

Police today said they have charged Milbury with assault and battery on a child, threats to commit a crime and disorderly conduct in connection with his alleged verbal and physical attack on a 12-year-old boy during a pee-wee exhibition hockey game last Friday night at the town-owned Larz Andersen Rink in Brookline.

...

The incident allegedly occurred at the end of the Winter Classic between the Boch Blazers for whom Milbury coaches and his son plays forward vs. the Boston Junior Black Hawks. It is alleged that after Milbury’s son and a player for the Black Hawks got into a scrape on the ice, Milbury charged out onto the rink and verbally berated and grabbed and shook the 12-year-old opposing player.

A statement on Milbury's behalf was released today by his lawyer, Daniel Rabinovitz.

“Mike Milbury denies any allegations that there was an assault of any kind. He simply intervened in an altercation between his son and an opposing player. No one was struck, no one was injured and no one was threatened.”

NBC, which owns and operates Versus (soon to become NBC Sports Network) also released a statement ont he accusations.

“We are aware of the story and are gathering the facts. We will not have any further statements until we know more information," NBC said.

If true -- and I accentuate that, he has only been charged at this point -- I don't think it will catch many by surprise. Milbury has long been recognized for his temper, among other things. Perhaps no moment was more infamous than the time that the whole Bruins team he played for climbed into the stands in a game against the Rangers and Milbury was seen ripping off the shoe of a fan and then hitting the fan with said shoe.

He didn't earn the nickname Mad Mike Milbury for nothing.

As an analyst, Milbury has been just about as controversial as he was a GM for the Islanders, albeit for different reasons. Milbury isn't looked upon too fondly by the Isles fans after what they view was a colossal failure as his time leading their franchise.

On TV, he's probably about as disliked by the viewers as he was the fans of the Islanders. He has been known to get loud and argumentative on the air as well as taking a lot of unpopular stances. But he's always been consistent. He has and continues to stand up for the rough side of the sport.

I'll just say what a wacky couple of days in Massachusetts for non-professional hockey. First there was the story about a player pooping in another player's glove, now this. Also, you might remember another hockey analyst, Matthew Barnaby, was arrested for DWI.

Not so much fun when it`s YOUR kid eh Mikey ?

Millbury and his mentor ,the other troglodyte on tv,Don Cherry, make fun of skill players and virtually,on air, refer to them as sissy`s.Gotta fight your kid`s battles Mikey ? What`s the matter,is he one of those "sissy`s" you and Cherry contemptuously bully and bad mouth all the time ?
If Mike`s son didn`t deserve any of this,i feel terrible for him.But knowing Mad Mike,i`d sure like to hear both sides of the story before i blame the other kid. What if the apple didn`t roll to far from the tree and the OTHER kid had had enough ?
Anyway,Millbury`s not liked by his peers or audience. He dosen`t belong on tv constantly looking down his nose, sneering at skilled players. We already have one of those, and he`s a bigot to boot.Don Cherry. We DON`T need anymore.
To bad it took a bully`s kid to get the treatment to get a bullies attention. And you`re a bully Mike. Not fun when it`s happening to you and yours is it ?

Money Grab

..........Did they ask anyone who was at the game what they saw?  That might've made for a better story.

And what is this?
" I'll just say what a wacky couple of days in Massachusetts for non-professional hockey. First there was the story about a , now this. Also, you might remember another hockey analyst, ."

Was this an editorial ? or a AN ASSAULT ON A 12 YEAR OLD BOY?  I'm confused.

Wait, never mind, I figured it out. You read my first comment about it, but didn't read my reply to NS after his post, and got all migingenuous about it.

I apologized for lumping all Bruins fans together, Smitty, and here you go labeling an entire city and fanbase. Nice job. Many went as far as to label the entire country, which is probably every bit as "migingenuous" as what you're complaining about, whatever that means. I have to guess you meant "disingenuous" - but since you use it to describe passion, that makes no sense. Passion leads to losing sight of reality, as people become blinded by emotion. The word I think you wanted to use refers to deliberately misleading, in a very non-passionate cold-blooded way. Come to think of it, I am not really sure what any of your post means, as it seems to do quite a bit of contradicting itself.

My point is that idiot fans, idiot cops, and idiot prosecutors exist everywhere, and the more you insist that they're only in Quebec, the stupider you sound to me. Many here are saying the cops had no business involving themselves in this. I guarantee you that many, if not most, of those same people said the same thing about the previous incident, and ridiculed an entire province because of it - pretty much like what you just did.

Mike Milbury charged with assaulting 12-year-old

Pretty sure a grown man stepping out on to the ice and doing whatever Milbury did to that KID at a PEEWEE game is not ironically linked to a whole fan base and the city of Montreal wanting to criminally prosecute a professional hockey player for hitting another professional hockey player in a professional hockey league match.

And it wasnt just Boston fans... it was everyone, it was an absolute joke. A joke to the point where VIA rail and AC owners were threatening to cancel sponsership to the league. That is the level of ridiculousness Habs fans are. Logic is thrown away to migingenuous passion.

Mike Milbury charged with assaulting 12-year-old

Although he is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, I can't see any situation where you assualt a 12 year old child and it is justified.

The passion of sports tends to bring out the worst and best of people unfortunately it may have brought out the worst in Mike Milbury.

Mike Milbury charged with assaulting 12-year-old

NS, I see plenty of people on this thread saying the police had no business being involved here either. Seems like the Quebec police aren't tje only ones who meddle where they have no business. Wink

Most reasonable Bruins fans see that Milbury is a relic that even in today's game is out of touch with what is right and what is wrong.

I am very glad to hear that. And I'm not talking to them. Should have said "many Bruins fans", and not simply "Bruins fans". My bad. Smile

To whoever it was that wondered why there wasn't video, the Brookline police captain has said, according to the , that there is video. Presumably, this was viewed prior to making a decision about whether to charge Milbury or not. They also say the other kid was "jawing with his son" - and nothing about a fight being broken up.
