No suspension for Kopecky

The NHL determined on Saturday morning that the incident at the end of Friday's Rangers-Panthers game was worth nothing more than a couple of $2,500 fines.

In the closing seconds Panthers forward Tomas Kopecky and Rangers defenseman Michael Del Zotto werei involved in a skirmish in front of the New York net. After Del Zotto gave Kopecky a shot up high with his stick, Kopecky responded by dropping Del Zotto with what was basically a sucker punch to the face.

Kopecky was then pulled out of the ensuing scrum by Mike Rupp, who then started to throw some punches of his own at the Panthers forward.

Kopecky received a match penalty for his punch on Del Zotto (Rupp was also given a game misconduct and a five-minute major for fighting), and it seemed like a pretty good bet that Kopecky would sit out at least a couple of games for his actions. Not the case. The league announced on Saturday that Kopecky and Del Zotto have each been fined $2,500, the maximum fine allowed, and both will be eligible to play in their team's next game.

The Panthers host the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday, while the Rangers will play the Flyers on Monday during the Winter Classic.

Of course, all parties involved will also be eligible to play when these two teams face off again next Thursday in New York, a meeting that could get ugly with some sort of vigilante justice if the post-game comments from Friday are any indication.

Following Friday's game Panthers coach Kevin Dineen said that Del Zotto deserved to get smashed in the face for his stick work on Kopecky, while Panthers forward Krys Barch said "You can’t allow that stuff to happen. That’s just not allowed to go on in terms of a teammate getting jumped like that. We’ll take care of that next week."

Mark your calendars.

No suspension for Kopecky

If I were Torts, I would bring Avery back, and let him go against Kopecky, then release him again. Guarantee that Kopecky doesn't want any more of Prust. 5-1 odds there is an all-out, including the goalies.

Getting worked over with a stick is one thing, sucker punch is another. Face the guy and drop them. I guess Shannahan is saying that because Del Zotto didn't get seriously hurt from it, that it was ok. Was funny to see Kopecky turtle.

That was funny. Kopecky was a real tough guy when the smaller dude wasn't looking. Rupp comes in and Kopecky goes down on his knees faster than Monica Lewinsky in the Oval office.

When you stick someone in the Face you better be ready to take a shot. Not saying Kopecky is not wrong as well but he was reacting to Del Zotto's Cheap Shot. At that point they were even, no need for Rupp to jump in and escalate it. I sure hope the Panthers get this taken care of next game between the two teams. Personally would rather be hit by in the face by an off balanced player with his glove on than take the butt end of a stick to the face. Man! That's tight! I didn't think Del Zotto was that type of player??

right, how funny, a guy who's not a fighter turtles to a fighter. Ruppp, the same guy who chickened out of a fight on hbo while trying to fight 1 guy, the tougher shelley challenges him, and Rupp, the "tough" guy, chicken's out,. I'm a Ranger fan, but Rupp is a female dog. He was trying to fight sestito, on same shift refuses shelley. He's a chick. Avery is gone because of that chick. Shelley, just sucker punch rupp the way he did kopecky, he's a bi---

Punishment fits the crime.  Del Zotto hit Kopecky in the head with a glove and butt end of stick, enough to knock his helmet off, and Kopecky suckers.  Both non-fighter so who knows if Del Zotto would have answered the challenge or if he would have even been asked.  Both pretty lame.
Yah.....Kopecky's going to hang in there with Rupp.....right.

Funny to watch Kopecky turtle when his opponent is actually facing him.  Good stuff!
