Carcillo suspended indefinitely for Gilbert hit

Daniel Carcillo is going to know Brendan Shanahan pretty well soon. At this rate he'll know Shanny's favorite food, his anniversary and exactly how hard Shanahan can lay the hammer down.

The Chicago Blackhawks forward earned himself an indefinite suspension from Shanahan over his hit Monday night on Tom Gilbert of the Edmonton Oilers. It was brutally impressive, an ugly yet eye-popping hit that sent Gilbert careening through the air like a Frisbee.

Holy smokes.

In this era of homer announcers, you know it's bad when the play by play guy's first word after the hit by one of his team's players is "Oh! That's going to be a suspension."

It is, the question remains how many games. That fits a dirty hit by about any definition you want to use. Not to mention boarding -- and interference if you felt so inclined.

"I knew who it was and you have to be aware," Gilbert said. "I should have been more ready for a guy whose made those kind of hits before."

Gilbert, not surprisingly, left the game with an injury from the hit. The kicker? Carcillo did, too. So not only did his hit likely cost him some games and salary from the NHL, it could also cost him some additional time if the injury is bad. Talk about a double whammy.

I admit to getting a little gun-shy on guessing the length of Shanahan suspension calls recently. I thought he let Raffi Torres go too long before suspending him for a third questionable hit in three games and also felt that he missed the boat on the Tomas Kopecky, Michael Del Zotto incident.

But there's no way there's not a hefty suspension for Carcillo here, right? After all, he has already been smacked by the Shanahammer once this season for boarding and has been suspended a somewhat remarkable five times already in his career.

That makes for the Shanahan trifecta: A bad hit that resulted in an injury from a player with a history of supplemental discipline. If there is no suspension from this mix, then I'm left wondering all over again like it's the Colin Campbell era.

I'd guess Carcillo gets an in-person hearing for this, opening up the possibility of five games or more. How many games do you think he should get?

Carcillo suspended indefinitely for Gilbert hit

I hope that worthless goon blew both his ACL and MCL out becuase of his actions.  I'm HAPPY he hurt himself!  Wish he'd broken his worthless neck. This jerk has to go.  He's a disgrace not only to the Blackhawks, but to the NHL (and to his mother too).

Carcillo suspended indefinitely for Gilbert hit

I am a lifelong Blackhawks' fan, but Carcillo is a thug and a smear upon the tradition of the Hawks.  I couldn't understand why Scottie Bowman signed this jerk in the off-season, but he is as responsible for this hit (and the several others that preceeded it) as Carcillo.  I would hope the NHL would put a lifetime suspension on him, but I doubt it.  This guy needs to go.

Carcillo suspended indefinitely for Gilbert hit

Indefinite because it does no good to suspend a guy that isn't in the lineup because of an injury.

Carcillo suspended indefinitely for Gilbert hit

In typical Carcillo fashion he puts out a flagrant hit that he knows is likely to cause an injury and get him suspended.  Hitting is a part of the game, but as players have become bigger, stronger and faster, the need to make changes to the rules was obvious.
Carcillo's hit shows a complete disregard for everyone's safety.
What has to happen for all players to get it through their heads that safety is paramount.  Clearly, suspensions and loss of income is not enough.............players continue to ignore the warnings and go in looking to hurt opposing players.
Seeing Carcillo injure himself was great, although I do not wish to see anyone hurt, hopefully it helps get the message across.
Perhaps banning him from the league for the remainder of the year without pay will get the message across.  This may sound extreme, but it seems it will take an extreme message deliverd to a sacrificial lamb to get the message out loud and clear.  Either learn to play in a manner that is safe for everyone, or don't play the game.

Carcillo suspended indefinitely for Gilbert hit

I'm sorry but Cooke still has aways to go before he can be considered as one who "has turned his game around" half a season doesn't make you a changed player in my book.

Indefinite?  Come on you can't put a number on that, pick one, but indefinite is just pushing the problem down the road.

Carcillo suspended indefinitely for Gilbert hit

Dirt hit!  Carcillo is a bum.  It's guys like him that give this game a bad name.  Not fighting or intensity of the game.  Sometimes bad plays happen by accident, but not when Carcillo is involved.  What a piece of shit!  If he would've waited 2 more seconds it would've been a clean hit with probably the same outcome.  He was so anxious to make the hit( because that's all he can do on skates) He cost his team a penalty, gave his organization a bad name and could've ruined a guys career.  I hope he gets 20.  Then gets put on waivers and sent packing to the AHL where he can be a bum all he wants.

Carcillo suspended indefinitely for Gilbert hit

They picked the DB up because nobody on the team is willing to hit anyone else.  I love watching the Hawks, but once they lost Buff, they lost all physical play.  He will get nailed for the hit by the Shannahammer.  When he comes back, he will continue to be physical.

Carcillo suspended indefinitely for Gilbert hit

If you dont think it was malicious look at the physics of the play. The defenseman slowed down to play the puck and defend himself against Carcillo. Carcillo steamrolled with all force. You can watch his head. He is watching defenseman whole way, never the puck. Carcillo never makes an attempt at the puck, nor did he have any intention of it. You can tell by the way he positioned himself and angled himself for the hit into the boards. He was thinking one thing the entire way. Smash the defender into the boards as hard as he possibly can. The first angle shown in video shows it. Nasty, Nasty hit. When the defenseman turns for the puck, Carcillo lays the full hit. Defenseman are not prepared for the hit because they are going for the puck first, like you are supposed to. Then they brace for the hit after the push it and are not defenseless. This is as cheap as a play as it gets. Yea it happened fast but you can see in the replay view from above Carcillo had one thing in mind. A big hit into the boards. He did not position himself for the puck, he had the forward momentum but he let up so he could hit the defenseman cheap. This is whats wrong with the sport. I like big hits, I love em but not dirty ones that can end seasons for players.

Carcillo suspended indefinitely for Gilbert hit

Definitely Car bOMB quality cheap hit. At first I thought it was a good hit, but then I watched replay. You cant do that. He meant to board and injure that defenseman and made no attempt at the puck on the forecheck. That was downright nasty! This is why we let car bomb go, we already have useless Jody Shelley no need for another talentless hack. I dont know why the B-Hawks picked up this douchebag...It is not about analayzing every hit, you cant board defenseman trying to get the puck on the dump and chase. You have to play the puck and body. Headhunter I hope he is suspended for the rest of the season. At least Avery and Cooke turned their dirty game around and became hockey players and not cheap shot artists like Car Bomb is...
