It's difficult to find the exact moment the Montreal Canadiens season went flying off the rails.

There are simply so many possibilities, and Friday's 5-4 shootout loss to the Penguins seems to be just another low in a season full of them. Even though they owned a two-goal lead with 16 minutes to play in regulation, the Canadiens still finished in the loss column for the 12th time in their past 16 games.

The game also brought some more unwanted attention to their young star defenseman, P.K. Subban, for what appeared to be a slew foot midway through the overtime period.

There was no penalty called on the play, but Subban was fined $2,500 on Saturday for what the NHL called a "dangerous trip." When compared to the play the Rangers claim was a slew foot on Brad Richards on Thursday, this one stands out as being way more deliberate and actually worthy of being called a slew foot.

Since he has taken over NHL player safety, Brendan Shanahan has not issued a suspension for a slew footing incident. He did, however, also fine Boston's Brad Marchand $2,500 for an incident involving Matt Niskanen earlier this season.

The last player to actually be suspended for a slew foot was Evgeny Artyukhin back in October, 2009, for his slew foot against, oddly enough, Niskanen during his days with the Dallas Stars. It was a three-game suspension.

The Canadiens enter Saturday's game in Toronto, one of the four teams between them and a playoff spot, nine points out of what would be the eighth and final spot, and they're in desperate need of a win, especially after letting a point slip away on Friday

"It's not even close to enough," said forward Max Pacioretty after Friday's game. "Especially against a team that's hanging around for a playoff push, both of us right now, when you look at that, if it goes the other way and we hang onto that lead ... it's frustrating that keeps happening. We have to find answers."

@theburgh.... not sure.  he does take hits after the play because he is and always has been scrappy but this concussion epidemic is scary.  Wondering if Ed Snider is buying the same helmets the rest of the NHL is using!

P.K. Subban fined $2,500 for 'dangerous trip'

Anyone who has/does play hockey knows how dangerous of a play that is, good call with the fine. All comes back to the "no respect for your opponent" additude around the league.

Great post, great insight, thanks Hockeymaster.   Please link some examples from this weekend that have that same trip in them, you know, since they happen every game as you say.

Subban has been on the fringe of discipline quite often, glad he finally got pinched for something.

@crow dog,  LoL good call.  I watched once and thought what the heck is the fine for, it was hooking - then I saw the slewfoot.  Oh yeah,  good fine.  I haven't watched enough of him to be able to agree with the posters calling him dirty but I will now.  If not for the wall that could've been a sweet "head to the ice" fall.

Mateo 365 - what's the deal with danny briere? I heard he got concussed but didn't know how bad. I like the kid and hope he's okay.

So let me make sure I understand this correctly .  As a result of you believing (not saying your wrong) that teams are getting away with playing dirty against your team.  That somehow makes it ok to play dirty against another team?  Without getting into a debate on whether those plays were dirty, or not we can agree they were incredibly dangerous plays.  While Subban's plays don't equal the intensity of those plays.  I wouldn't be surprised if someone could make a highlight video of 20+ over the line plays for the last 2 seasons alone, but thats ok right?  Since a couple teams had big dangerous plays against Montreal that makes it perfectly ok for Subban to play dirty against teams that had nothing at all to do with those dangerous hits.

Sorry.  "well he did it first!" argument stops working when you enter grade school.

Like I said in another thread.  The kid has tons of talent.  If he would quit with the BS he could be something special.  It's like he has this "me vs's the world" complex.  I wonder if he honestly doesn't think some of the things he does are wrong.  He just thinks everyone is out to get him.  The longer he continues to play like that.  The less of a chance he'll ever turn into the player he could be, and he'll have no respect from his fellow players.

OMG this is wayyy worse than Max Pacioretty, puck nowhere to be seen,  getting his neck purposely slammed and broken into a metal stanchion. Resulting of course in zero suspension for a Bruin from Big Daddy Campbell surprise, surprise .Or even some games later. Mason Raymond of the Canucks being used as a battering ram , by another of the numerous Boston goons, from behind into the boards . Resulting AGAIN in another vertabrae broken, and AGAIN without any suspension from Big Daddy Campbell of Campbell and Son fame.

What a danger PK is out there!
