Tuomo Ruutu could soon be on the move

Less than a month away from the NHL trade deadline and rumors are quickly starting to fly.

One of the busiest teams this year is expected be the Carolina Hurricanes, as they're currently near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings and have a number of players eligible for unrestricted free agency this summer. One of those players is forward Tuomo Ruutu, and he could be on the move as early as this week according to ESPN's Pierre LeBrun and TSN's Darren Dreger.

Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford has always been aggressive when it comes to making moves, and has already made a couple this season.  A couple of weeks he sent upcoming free agent Alexei Ponikarovsky to the New Jersey Devils for defenseman Joe Sova and a fourth-round draft pick, which came just weeks after he shipped disappointing defenseman Tomas Kaberle and the remainder of his contract to the Montreal Canadiens for Jaroslav Spacek. And there could soon be more where that came from.

Ruutu should be able to bring the Hurricanes a better return. In 51 games this season he has 15 goals and 11 assists, and over the past four years has scored at a rate that would average out to nearly 20 goals per 82 games. Any team that trades for him will be on the hook for the remainder of his salary cap hit, which for this week would come out to about $1.3 million for the rest of the season.

There is no shortage of contenders that could be interested, but keep an eye on Pittsburgh, Nashville or Boston, all teams that would Ruutu seem to be an excellent fit for given his aggressive forechecking and the fact at least two of those teams, Pittsburgh and Nashville, could use some an upgrade when it comes to secondary scoring on the wings.

Still, at this point it just seems to be a matter of when and where rather than if. Once that shoe falls the focus will then surely shift to Carolina's other upcoming free agents.

Tuomo Ruutu could soon be on the move

^This. In fact, I think this is copied verbatim from a post I made about a week ago. You stealin' my thunder, '69? Tongue out

LOL   Actually I read what you said but believe it or not, I actually typed it... no copying and pasting Foot in mouth

Seriously though, I've never liked Ruutu and I'm not gonna start liking him now.  The Wings acquiring him would be painful.

Tuomo Ruutu could soon be on the move

Tuomo was with the Hurricanes in 09 when they went to the conference finals.  Playing in 16 games, with a goal and 3 assists.
One trip to the postseason his entire career.   He wasn't 100% for that postseason either.    Almost every year of his career he has not had to face high expectations.

Hockeybob, I'm going to take a little exception about his playoff experience.  Tuomo was with the Hurricanes in 09 when they went to the conference finals.  Playing in 16 games, with a goal and 3 assists.

Now admittedly he hasn't been in the playoffs since, but going to the conference finals is a lot deeper than a lot of players on contending teams have gone this year.  He's a winger who can play center in a pinch and can also take a face off.  I saw you knocked him on his face off percentage on another post, however, he has been working with the best, Rod Brind'Amore and gotten a lot better.  Would he be your first choice?  Probably not, but he isn't a bad forward to stick in the circle if you center was to get kicked out.

Tuomo Ruutu could soon be on the move

The guy has been in the rumor mill for so long that I wouldn't be surprised if he has a complete collapse (Rostislav Olesz-style) as soon as he is moved this year.

...fixed it for ya
Olesz was only kept for so long because there was a danger of somebody picking him up on waivers initially (leaving Chicago on the hook for 3 years.)   He was taken to get Campbell off of the books.   Nobody wanted Olesz, and his contract and it's structure was a disaster in waiting anyway.
The Hawks used their one chance to get a very restrictive deal off of the books, so while it definately hurt them this year, it's not a problem moving forward.    Kenny doesn't even have as much depth in the system as Stan to trade for Ruutu without it stinging a little bit.

Tuomo Ruutu could soon be on the move

Hockeybob, I agree 100 percent with your analysis of Ruutu.  He's one of those players people want on their team... that is until he gets there.  That's when teams figure out the player isn't as good as they believed he would be.

As long as he stays away from the Wings I don't care where he goes....

Tuomo Ruutu could soon be on the move

The guy has been in the rumor mill for so long that I wouldn't be surprised if he has a complete collapse (Penner-style) as soon as he is moved this year.   He looks great on paper, but the guy has been under little to no pressure most of his career, he has almost no meaningful playoff experience, and he's been mind screwing with himself because he knows he's on the block.

Rutherford waited too long and is asking too much.   Carolina is going to win any trade at this point.

Yet he fills a ton of needs on various rosters.
